We’re quickly reaching the end of 2009 and that means lots of lists (well, for K-pop that would me more than usual) and losts of netizens squabbling over which performers ruled ‘09. MAMA and the Golden Disk Awards have already started and unpleasant back-and-forth, but some Korean media is turning to statistics.
According to A-Star Magazine (nope doesn’t ring a bell with me either) these are the Top 20 Popular Asian Artists of 2009:
1. Super Junior – 92.6%
2. TVXQ – 72.1%
3. SHINee – 70.3%
4. Big Bang – 47.8%
5. 2PM – 36.8%
6. Girls’Generation – 35.3%
7. 2NE1 – 25.7%8. F.T Island – 24.3%
9. SS501 – 15.4%
10. f(x) – 11.8%
11. Kim Bum – 8.5%
12. Wonder Girls – 8.1%
13. KARA – 5.9%
14. Lee Min Ho 5.1%
15. LEE JUN KI / Xing – 4.4%
17. Jang Geun Suk – 2.9%
18. 2AM / Beast / U-kiss – 2.2%
Seeing as the resulting percentage is 300%, no doubt there is little confidence in a unscientific popularity poll conducted by a little-known Korean magazine. Since my math skills are epic fail, I won’t even try to reason it out, but Soompi poster Haemin13 has an intriguing explanation for the wonky polling:
“If the survey asked 1 vote per person, and there will be 100 respondents, then the total percentage would have been 100. But the total percentage produced 300, then it means that each person can vote 3 groups. so everything is multiplied by 3.if Super Junior got 92.6%, divided by 3, that’s around 30.77% only. The correct way of presenting the results is by dividing all figures to 3 to produce 100% in result.
The reason why they didn’t divide the results to 3 is probably because the rest of the results would produce many insignificant numbers. Like their 2.2% is actually just 0.73% which actually looks bad (in figures) for not even reaching 1%.
Another possibility is there were 300 respondents.”
