The 4-person girl group 2NE1 revealed their unknown story regarding their group name.
On MBC Radio FM “Park Kyung Lim’s Starry Night,” which aired on the 2nd, the guests 2NE1 told of the painstaking process of choosing group names that were thought of before debut.
2NE1’s members, Park Bom, CL, Gong Min Ji, and Sandara Park said that before the group name of ‘2NE1’ was chosen, ‘Tsunami,’ ‘Cool Chicks,’ ‘Yang Ssa’s Children,’ and ‘YG Girls’ came up as candidates, but in the early morning hours before revealing the group name, it was finally chosen to be “2NE1.”
At the time of first revealing 2NE1’s group name, the group name’s English phonetic transcription was “To Anyone,” but finding out late that there was another singer with the same English phonetic transcription, they changed it to “2NE1.”
Also, 2NE1 passionately sang their debut song Fire, American pop singer Rihanna’s Umbrella, and Big Bang’s We Belong Together live, showing advanced singing ability and receiving high praise from the host Park Kyung Lim and the radio listeners.
2NE1, who even before debut, being called the “Female Big Bang,” garnered great interest from the netizens, acquired 1st on various music sites’ charts with Big Bang and the CM song “Lollipop.” Their debut song, Fire, also received 1st on various online charts in just two days of the song release, showing 2NE1’s real ability that is unlike a new singer that just debuted.
